Dollar-A-Day
An iPad donation kiosk concept for CAIR-Florida.
Dollar-A-Day is a donation kiosk concept for CAIR-Florida: an iPad and a Square card reader where supporters give once or start a monthly gift, like a dollar a day, in a few taps.
Who it’s for
wavedepth subcontracted Monty’s team to build Dollar-A-Day for CAIR-Florida. Before designing anything, the team developed a persona of who would use it: Ali, a CAIR-Florida employee who stays at his masjid after prayer to spend time with his community. He wants more people giving and volunteering, and the old donation system took too long.
Leading the build
Monty ran product: coordinating the front-end and backend developers, setting timelines, and prototyping the UX and UI in Figma before anyone wrote code.
Every screen went into one flow chart first: the staff setup that authorizes the app and connects the card reader, and the donor’s path through a one-time or monthly gift.
Staff set the kiosk up once: authorize the app with a code, turn on the microphone and location the card reader needs, and connect the reader.
Building it
Monty built the Swift iOS front end and helped build the PHP backend: payment processing on the server with the Square Payment API, recurring donations, and subscription management.
Monthly gifts ask for a name, email, and phone first, because Square needs a card on file to run a subscription. After every gift, donors can sign up for the newsletter or to volunteer and get a receipt, and then the kiosk resets for the next person.
